West Sussex Orthopaedics is the website of Mr Ruy da Assunção FRCS (Tr & Orth). Mr da Assunção is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Nuffield Health Brighton Hospital and BMI Goring Hall Hospital. He has specialist expertise in knee and hip surgery with a focus on knee replacement, hip replacement, knee ligament reconstruction and joint preserving  surgery of the knee such as partial knee replacement and knee osteotomy (re-alignment surgery). In the NHS, Mr da Assunção consults at Worthing Hospital, where he also maintains an interest in orthopaedic trauma. In the private sector, Mr da Assunção consults and operates at Nuffield Health Brighton Hospital and BMI Goring Hall Hospital, Goring-by-Sea. Mr da Assunção accepts all major UK health insurers. About Mr da Assunção

Ruy da Assunção FRCS (Tr & Orth)

Mr da Assunção was awarded MBBCh from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa in 1997. He moved to the south of England in 1998 where he undertook basic surgical training and was awarded MRCS in 2003.

His orthopaedic surgical training took place on the Wessex Orthopaedic Surgical Rotation and he was awarded FRCS (Tr&Orth) in 2009. He pursued his interest in lower limb and orthopaedic trauma surgery with orthopaedic trauma fellowships at major trauma centres in Seattle, USA (Harbourview Medical Centre) and Perth, Australia (Royal Perth Hospital), where he gained experience in the management of complex bone and joint injuries. He also undertook a hip and knee reconstruction fellowship in Sydney, Australia where he gained experience in advanced hip and knee replacement techniques as well as knee ligament reconstruction. He was subsequently appointed as a hip and knee fellow at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford where he gained experience in complex hip and knee replacement, partial knee replacement, ligament reconstruction and revision surgery.

In December 2011 he was appointed as a consultant at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. During his training and fellowships, he undertook clinical and laboratory research on several aspects of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery and has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented papers at national and international meetings. Mr da Assunção has performed over a thousand joint replacements and performs about 150 to 200 joint replacements a year in addition to reconstruction procedures such as knee osteotomy and knee ligament reconstruction. Mr da Assunção is a Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association, a member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee and a member of the British Hip Society.
